In the world of Pokémon, the Pokéball is an essential part of a Trainer’s arsenal. They allow the user to catch their quarry after it has been weakened, opening up and absorbing the creature as a form of energy. Of course, this doesn’t always work, and many Pokémon will manage to escape, an action that can completely destroy the Ball. Likewise, some tamed Pokémon — such as Ash Ketchum’s Pikachu — prefer to exist outside their spheres.

Once a Pokémon is captured, it can be trained and deployed for use in battles. After a victory (or a defeat), the Ball allows the Trainer to recall their selected challenger. Traditionally, one Trainer can possess a total of six Pokéballs, each of which can be carried in a bag or attached to a belt. This is made easier by the centre button, which allows their size to be diminished when pressed.

The most common form of Pokéball is the standard red-and-white design that is often seen in the animated series and video games. However, there are a number of different versions: Great Ball, Ultra Ball, Master Ball, Safari Ball, Level Ball, Lure Ball, Moon Ball, Friend Ball, Love Ball, Heavy Ball, Fast Ball, Sport Ball, and more.
