Welcome To Tokyo

Durarara!! (or ‘DRRR!!’) find its routes as a Japanese light novel series by writer Ryohgo Narita and illustrator Suzuhito Yasuda. It was later adapted into an anime series by the same name, which released in 2010.

Set in Tokyo’s downtown district of Ikebukuro, Durarara!! starts from the perspective of Mikado Ryūgamine, a young boy with a dream to live life in the big city. After he finally makes the move, he starts attending the Raira Academy with Masaomi Kida, his childhood friend from years prior.

Together, the pair explore the streets of Ikebukuro, with Masaomi making a point to avoid certain people in the city, including Shizuo Heiwajima (a violent man with superhuman strength), Izaya Orihara (an information broker), and a gang called ‘the Dollars’.

While exploring, Mikado sees a figure known as the ‘Black Rider’ — a local legend who rides around the district on a black motorcycle and is rumoured to be missing a head (though the helmet obscures the Black Rider’s face). Unbeknownst to Mikado, the Black Rider’s true name is Celty Sturluson, an Irish dullahan looking for her stolen head while working as an underworld courier.

Durarara!! follows each of the multiple characters equally, splitting the focus over different episodes. Throughout the sprawling narrative, their individual lives intersect with respect to a common incident.
