The Origins of Batman Comic Books

The character of Bruce Wayne (better known by his superhero alias, Batman) first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (1939). Since his debut, the Dark Knight has starred in a number of comic books, the most notable of which are his self-titled series, the aforementioned Detective Comics, and the various renditions of the Justice League.

Though the most famous vigilante of Gotham City is commonly perceived to be a figure of darkness, his decades-long history has seen him undergo lots of transformations, with Batman comics alternating between the ultra-serious and the down-right camp. Modern releases, however, tend toward the former, and it is often accepted that the Caped Crusader is a stern dealer of justice, contrasting with many of his superhero peers, such as the more light-hearted Superman and the Flash.

Build Your Batman Book Library

If you’re looking to expand your collection of Batman graphic novels or begin a deep dive into the exploits of one of the greatest characters ever put to page, we have a broad selection of books to choose from, spanning different eras of DC Comics.

Beginners may want to explore classic titles, such as A Death in the Family, a story in which readers learn the tragic fate of the second Robin, Jason Todd. Conversely, long-time readers will have no trouble jumping into lesser-known comics (like the crossovers between Batman and Superman).

These Batman comics are presented in high-quality hardcovers, which protect them from most damages and enhance their appearance on the shelf. For the most comprehensive experience, we’d suggest buying each volume in a series or opting to purchase standalone graphic novels.
