British Film and Video Censorship after 1983

This feature length documentary covers the period of the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) after the Video Nasties scandal and how they dealt with films. It goes into detail about how the BBFC operated and how the head of the organisation handled the publicity. It also goes into the areas of importing and smuggling video tapes worked and the dawning of the fan culture for film genres. But it also makes that point that censorship and moral outrage has little to do with the films that were shown and more to do with manufactured press outrage and rent-a-quote politicians wanting to get coverage. The DVD also features two discs of trailers and discussion by various film experts of the videos that made it onto 'Section 3' of the Obscene Publications Act. This meant that the tapes could be seized and destroyed, but no actual prosecution took place against the films. These provide further insight for horror fans. Worth getting for people with an interest in film, horror and British cultural history.

Conversational Examination of the Video Nasty

An interesting examination of the BBC under the leadership of James Ferman. The documentary is structured by splicing together input from a range of people who interacted with the BBC first hand, including certification staff, directors, store owners and collectors. The result is an informative discussion littered with personal memories and anecdotes to add legitimacy. The set also includes several postcards of famous video nasty posters, as a nice physical bonus.
