An American musician, Prince is one of the most successful performers in the world. Over the course of his thirty-five-year-long career, he achieved more than 100 million worldwide album sales, five US number-one singles, fifteen worldwide number-one hits, and eight worldwide number-one albums.
He released twenty-five studio albums and five soundtrack albums: Prince (1979), Diamonds And Pearls (1991), Controversy (1981), 1999 (1982), Sign O' The Times (1987), and Purple Rain (1984). Having amassed a total of thirteen million album sales, Purple Rain is acknowledged as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.
Prince is recognised as one of the greatest stars of the ‘80s and early ‘90s, positioned alongside such celebrities as Michael Jackson and Madonna. As well as being a gifted vocalist and guitarist, he was also an accomplished pianist, drummer, bassist, and saxophonist. His innovative music style included funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, psychedelia, and — of course — pop. His eclectic genre hopping, flamboyant and androgynous persona, energetic and impassioned live shows, and wide-ranging singing voice — which included an impressive falsetto — made him into more than a superstar. Purple Rain was extremely successful, and it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
Because of his creative genius, Prince was eventually inducted into the prestigious Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004.
