Bob Marley

Bob Marley is a true music legend. As a pioneer of the reggae genre, Bob Marley had a major influence over the visibility of Jamaican music around the globe.

This true pop-culture icon has millions of fans the world over and has a lasting legacy that goes way beyond the music world.

Small Beginnings

Born in Nine Mile, Jamaica, in 1945, nobody could have ever known just how much Bob Marley would shape and influence Jamaican music and culture in his lifetime. His musical style fused elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady genres, and his talent for lyrics and song writing meant that his songs were - for many people - more than just music.

This Rastafari icon began his career in 1963, after forming the band Bob Marley and the Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. With this band, Marley achieved global recognition with the hit song "One Love/People Get Ready". Some of Marley’s most famous songs include 'Get Up Stand Up', 'Sun is Shining', 'I Shot the Sheriff', 'Waiting in Vain', 'Redemption Song', and 'Buffalo Soldier'.

Marley was also an impressive live performer, with some of his most memorable performances including the Smile Jamaica Concert (1976), the One Love Peace Concert (1978), the Amandla Festival of Unity (1979) and the Zimbabwe Independence Celebrations (1980).

He was posthumously honoured with a designated Order of Merit by Jamaica. And in 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With his impressive career, dedication to promoting Rastafarian and Jamaican culture, and incredible contributions to the world of Reggae, the music magazine ‘Rolling Stone’ have ranked him at Number 11 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
