One of the best of arthouse - a masterpiece.

As a Lars von Trier (fake) fan, I can easily say that this is my favorite film of his so far but I don't want to be too certain about that or how I rank his films because I sadly haven't seen Dancer in the Dark and much more yet (I honestly don't know why). Breaking the Waves wasn't easy to enjoy but impossible to go against. Dogville I cannot stop thinking about. Antichrist affected me like no other horror movie has. Nympomaniac has one of my favorite scenes in film history. It's been almost two years since I first saw Melancholia (also my first von Trier film) and it still has a special place in my heart. Video: Eye-popping. Stunning. Perfect. Every detail was sharp, you can make out every single hair, wrinkle and just about everything, and the actors just pop out of the screen. All the whites, such as on Justine's wedding dress, explode in your eyes and the blacks are as deep and inky as it can be. The shots of Melancholia the planet in space are pure eye candy. I know it's extremely unlikely but I hope Artificial Eye will join the UHD party and make this the first release on that format. It's a shame they haven't already. Just thinking about how this would look with HDR makes me drool. Audio: No complaints here either. I only tried the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track and it was excellent. The horse house scenes sound just like you're there. I'll check out the LPCM 2.0 next time I watch this but it may be a while. Extras were worth checking out too. The whole Filmbyen thing didn't really interest me but the interviews and making-of featurette are well worth a watch. There's also a commentary but I'm not a commentary person so I stopped after like 15 minutes whoops. A little more extras would've been nice but there's nothing we can do about that. Overall: The film is brilliant. Not everyone will like it and that's fine. Just stick to your Hollywood end-of-the-world flicks rather than criticizing Melancholia for being too slow and/or boring. But if you loved it, do yourself a favor and order. Your eyes are in for a treat. (Unimportant note that I'm going to note anyway: Melancholia remains my #1 favorite film of 2011, followed by Shame and The Skin I Live In. Both are highly recommended too.)
